Now that the brewery is running the Saint George Hotel you knew it wouldn't be long before we were serving beer. Longtime brewery man Justin Dalton serves the first pint out of the hotel bar to customer Steve White.
The bar is going to feature Weston products from Weston Brewing Company, Pirtle Winery, Jowler Creek Winery and the McCormick Distilling Company.

Trial by Fire!

Jeff Horn has been at the brewery now for months and finally got his big chance to prove himself on pepper day.
He cut the entire 60 pounds of fresh hot peppers that are added to the fermenter in each batch of Li'l Lucy's Hot Pepper Ale. The aroma of jalapenos and serranos filled the brewery for hours.

NO...we are not flooded.

West Indian Amber Lager Intro

We are finally getting ready to release #4 in the Brew Lab series. This is the first lager and has taken a long time to get ready to go. It has been more than a month since we threw in the fresh cut mangoes and peppers. Don't worry though this is nowhere near the fire ball that was #2. This one is relatively light in body with hints of fresh peppers and fruit. We are pretty sure you haven't had one like this before.

We will be introducing it at the pub Friday, April 29th. Give us a call at 816-640-5235 or email me if you would like to join us for the party. If you can't join us Friday grab a sample at the Parkville Microfest the following day.

April 29th Beer Introduction Menu:

Starter: Cajun Sausage Cheese Dip with toasted pretzel tips.

Jesse James Beer at Long Last

After months of waiting and a small run with test packaging the Jesse James beer is headed to market. It wasn't the easiest week of bottling but thanks to some long hours by Peter and the packaging crew more than 560 cases are ready to roll.

O'Malley's Stout & Pub Warmer Dinner

Friday, February 11 is the date for the next big dinner. We are introducing O'Malley's Irish Stout and celebrating the season with Pub Warmer Winter Ale. The dinner will be in the Upper Pub and will begin at 6pm for beer tasting and appetizers. Dinner service will begin at 7pm.
The dinner is $25 per person and includes full meal, beer, and admission to the lower cellar for musical entertainment.

The menu for the dinner has been announced and is listed below.
Stater: Irish Potato Skins
Soup: Chestnut Soup
Entree: Cinnamon Pork or Cranberry Chicken with Rice Pilaf & Glazed Carrots
Dessert: Pumpkin Pecan Rum Cake with hazelnut mousse

Here comes Prototype. Our first stout.

Here is a photo of Corey shoveling the dark grain from batch two of the stout. Hopefully the local cows have developed a taste for the new grain bill.
Labels have finally arrived and look like the photo below. As of Wednesday we look forward to getting the Proto-Stout out of the pub and into the mouths of the public.
We are hoping to make this new stout into O'Malley's Irish Stout down the road. With your tasting and input we will try to make it the best Irish-Style Dry Stout in the USA.
Peter and Kevin are seen at the right fighting mightily against the antique labeling machine.
Jesse Dalton is mastering the fine art of bottle handling. His past experience was in removing bottles from boxes.

Tasting Notes:
This malt bill for this stout includes Pale 2-row base malt along with Chocolate, Roasted and Caramel malt.
We use nothing but East Kent Goldings to bitter and flavor and Irish Ale yeast to ferment. We have imported everything but the water in order to make this the most authentic Irish Stout available!

The O'Malley Bus Gets a Makeover

Mike & Peter Save the Day

The week before Christmas with stores (and us) running out of Cream Ale and Drop Kick the bottling line decided it needed an unscheduled vacation. With no time to lose Mike, Peter and the nice folks at Jim Turnbull welding made the necessary repairs and got things up and running.
A sigh of relief fell over the brewery as Drop Kick and Cream Ale came off the line just in time for New Year's Eve.

Pub Warmer is Back!!

It has been more than three years, but Pub Warmer has finally made it back into the lineup. This Winter Warmer Ale is made with fresh ginger, nutmeg, allspice and cinnamon. We add all that to an amber ale that has just a bit of extra alcohol.
Pub Warmer is available on tap at the brewery and at fine grocery and liquor stores across Missouri. Look for it in Kansas soon.

Drop Wins Gold Medal

Last year our own Andee Weinfurt published a book of essays called "So This is Christmas... and other daily disasters." Her friends helped arranged for a photo shoot for the cover to take place here at the pub. We found out yesterday the cover art won the "Best in Show" prize at the 6th Annual Independent Creative Excellence Awards hosted by the Kansas City Freelance Exchange. Bob Reeder and Connacht Town will be joining us this year for New Year's Eve and we are preparing for the big night here in Weston.
We are doing things a bit differently this year.

Tickets to the pub include admission beginning at 4pm, live entertainment from 8pm to midnight, collector's champagne flute and champagne for the midnight toast. Pub food will be available in the cellars.

The wait is finally over. Weston Ruddy Wheat and Brew Labs #2 Hot Pepper Ale are both out on the shelves in the great state of Missouri. If you see them where you shop be sure to give them a try.

Weston Ruddy Wheat combines the Irish and American Midwest traditions. Amber to red in color and packed with flavor provided by a variety of wheat and barley malts this one has a nice honey amber flavor with the expected wheat richness.

Hot Pepper Ale is definitely our boldest flavor to this point. A nice, innocent golden ale is the base for this monster. More than 60lbs of peppers died for 18 barrels of this gem. Available in stores in 22oz bottles and on draft at the brewery.

First Day on the Road

After a good long wait for licensing and planning, the first day of O'Malley's of Weston distribution is here. Sean and Justin are on the road as I write stacking cases of Weston beer all over the metro (Missouri side). This is also the first day of the return of the Pack-O-Craic. This is by far the best batch of each of the flavors so be sure to give it a try for the holidays and beyond. Check Out This Weird Duck

Leave it to our regulars to burn their creative energy on this. Suddenly one evening there was a taped-together drunk duck (known to scientists as a "Pengu-ican") sitting in the hallway leading to the pub. We aren't sure exactly what the purpose is, but no one has the heart to take it away. So for more than a month this little fellow has been living in the hall drinking Drop Kick Ale. If you haven't met this new mascot, now is your chance. New Year's is coming soon and we can't guarantee his safety.
PS. I'm sure the word "Jimmy" written in marker on his side doesn't mean anything.

Blizzard 2009

If anyone doesn't think we will go to any lengths to get your O'Malley's beer ready for St. Pat's let this be your proof. I departed for Wisconsin at 6:30am Tuesday morning to go get bottles for the upcoming Pack O' Craic and got more than I bargained for.
I made it to Milwaukee just three hours past due, but the trip home proved more exciting. The top picture shows the first white-out on the way back. I made the 5 hour trip from WI to Des Moines in 12 hours and decided to spend the night in IA.
Then woke up for the trip back to Weston only to find I-35 in the condition you see in picture 2 for 100 miles. You might ask why I was driving and taking pictures. A fair question but since I am not one of the literally 100 plus trucks I saw in the ditch I should be commended.
I finally made it back in time to bottle only to find out that the line was screwed. (Mike will get that fixed). But not fear. The Pack O' Craic will be in stores next week as promised.

After nearly four years of brewing session beers for O'Malley's pub the we are ready to stretch our imagination.
Beginning next week we are going to begin experimenting with all types of styles.
These beers will be higher in alcohol content and will be sold to the public in 22oz bottles so beer fans can try the different flavors.
The first new beer is along the lines of an IPA. It will be our guinea pig to see how the whole system will work. We are looking to have it ready to taste at the brewery in late January at a special beer intro party. The beer will then be released in 22oz bottles if it passes the taste test.
We are taking suggestions on future flavors and are looking to have a bunch of fun with this new experiment.

In case you were one of the lucky few to try to 15 gallons of Coffee Stout last year you will realize the significance of this fine day. We bottled 36 cases of the nectar and put the rest in kegs to be served in the restaurant, pub and festival. Come on out and let us know what you think.

O'Malley's Cream Ale Gets a Facelift

After two years of leading the way. O'Malley's Cream Ale is out in its new package. With the help of the folks at Blacktop Creative the original artwork was given a bit more color and a hand-draw new look. The new packaging coincides with the breweries new pasteurization system. The new package is being introduced as far away as St. Paul, MN to give fans of the Irish tradition a little taste of O'Malley's. Be sure to give the new package a try and let us know what you think.

Drop Kick Finally in the Bottle

Deliveries of the new Drop Kick beer will begin the week after the 4th of July. Shipments will be made all over town as well as to Wichita, Topeka, Lawrence, Sedalia, Warrensburg, Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Don't forget this one is for a good cause. $2 per case goes to the Kansas City Soccer Foundation. Truly a beer you can feel good about drinking. Be sure to let us know what you think after trying a six-pack.

Pasteurizer Arrives

On Monday morning a new era at the Weston Brewing Company arrived on a flatbed trailer. At about 8:30am a truck from North Carolina pulled into the WBC parking lot with the 10'x24' piece of new equipment. Sean is seen in the photo getting into position to raise the machine from the trailer.
The next step in the process was to stand and stare in awe while trying to figure out how this was ever going to make it into the brewery. Initial attempts to lift as planned nearly tipped the forklift.
About five gut-wrenching hours later the pasteurizer was lined up and ready to move into it's new home.
The last photo was taken from inside the brewery as we prepared for the final step.

Local Products of Weston

The Weston Brewing Company is proudly moving towards completing the circle of food, drink and nature. The brewery donates spent grain to local cattle operations. Three different ranchers currently feed the high-protein leftovers of brewing to Weston cattle. Four healthy Galloway "Belties" enjoy a drink near Red Barn Farm. These four steers get a regular dose of barley.
The Weston Brewing Company's America Bowman Restaurant is working with local ranchers and farmers to provide patrons with as much local meat and produce as the growing season begins in Weston.

Big Changes for Spring

After recovering from St. Patrick's Day at an Irish brewery it is time to get to work. With several new beers planned for summer and beyond and an expanding region the brewery is being prepared for a tunnel pasteurizer. The new equipment will make the beer more consistent on store shelves all over the midwest. The downside is the thing is huge. As you can see we are tearing things up to make it fit. Stay tuned for the "pasteurizer party" coming later in April.
The brewery isn't the only thing getting a face lift this Spring. The outdoor patio area is getting a much-needed makeover that is scheduled to be complete in about two weeks. New walls and furniture and speakers will add to the outside atmosphere. The snow and freezing may slow us a bit but we'll get there. (Left: Sean posing for a photo while working on the wall.")

St. Pat's at O'Malley's

St. Pat's 2009 was a cause for a big celebration. More than 600 folks joined us yesterday. We very much appreciate the support and all the fun you brought to Weston. A full day of Irish music, beer and food left all of us a little worn out as seen in the photo. Justin and Pete work themselves into a stooper feeding corned beef and cabbage to the masses. But don't worry about us, we will be back in action this weekend with Flannigan's Right Hook. They are a big favorite at the Pub and always bring a crowd.
For those of you who might be worried. There will be plenty of Leapin' Leprechaun beer on tap at O'Malley's. We are out of the seasonal bottles, but the popularity of the new blonde ale will keep it on tap.

Brew Dinner

The event is Friday, February 20th beginning at 6:30pm. The hosted dinner will be in the Upper Pub. Appetizers begin at 6:30pm with dinner starting at 7pm. The meal and Weston Brewing Company beer will be $25 which includes pub entrance for the evening. The first 75 reservations will be in the pub with additional reservations in the restaurant available at a variety of times. Join me for a great night.

Crab Bowl Dip - Start things off with this refreshing crab dip. Made with our own Leaping Leprechaun beer. Try our new seasonal with this one.
Caldo de Queso - OK, we lost the Irish theme for a minute but we don't think you'll mind. This one is made with our Emerald Lager and that one is the perfect match for this course.

Entree Choices:

Grilled Swordfish - This is our Lent special this year and we couldn't wait to show it off. This one is grilled with our special Drop Kick Ale brewed for the Kansas City Wizards.
Beef & O'Malley's - This is a twist on our traditional beef & Guinness served in the restaurant for years. This was part of our first beer dinner ever and one of our favorites. Ofcourse, you will want to enjoy this with a Cream Ale.

Catch the Leprechaun

January marked the first month for our new "Leaping Leprechaun" beer and the early results are exciting. It quickly became the new favorite at the pub taking the title from the popular Cream Ale on draught. It even doubled Guinness here at the pub. (Not easy!)
The Leprechaun is already spread out pretty well across the Greater KC area and has recent made its way to Topeka, Lawrence, Sedalia, Warrensburg, St. Joe and Wisconsin. The little green box will be in Nebraska by the end of the month for all the O'Malley's fans up that way. If you would like to have a try come up and see us or visit a nearby liquor store. Be sure to hurry through as this guy will become scarce after March 17th.

Monkey Flies Into Weston

The Weston Brewing Company is proud to welcome the fellows from Flying Monkey Beer. Flying Monkey has been in the Kansas City area for more than a decade. Brewing began before Thanksgiving and the newly-brewed beer will be served on draft around KC, MO next week.

I witnessed such an event last night at the Sprint Center in the form of Celtic Thunder. Thank God my ticket was free. Now before you lambaste me as a bitter ex-singer with a jealous axe to grind let me give the show the only props I can. All the musicians are extremely talented. Twenty year old Keith Harkin sang what may be the best Mountains of Mourne I have ever heard and the scant traditional music was lovely for the most part. But I digress. I'm not trying to write a review. I'm here to rant. I'm pressing the rant button right.......now. People; listen very carefully. If you listen closely enough you'll hear the faint sound of Tommy Makem turning over in his grave. I'm not dense. I understand this is a pop show. I understand that it's the McDonald's, at best, of Irish music. I understand its demogrpahic is youngish women with disposable incomes and fuzzy conceptions of what Celtic music really is. I understand that Celtic rock, which I enjoy, bridges the gap between younger cultures and exposes them to traditional Irish music they might otherwise miss. I get it. And it's valid. What I can't understand is how anyone sitting in that crowd could be thinking, "You know...if I don't hear Knights in White Satin tonight I shall be sorely dissapointed. That's right. Knights in White Satin. Along with Desperado, Puppy Love, and I Want to Know What Love Is. Foreigner, for God's sake? Really? I think Sean O'Malley, with whom I was sitting, said it best. "This is an insult". Cotten candy stagecraft for a short attention span culture without the means or desire to discover what real Irish music is. Phil Coulter, what were you thinking putting this together? Is this really what you want the American populace to walk away with as the definition of Irish Music? I won't even push my own pub. I'll push all the pubs that allow traditional music to thrive. Find one close to you. Go see Eddie Delahunt. Go see Bob Reeder. Go see Tom Dahill. Go see The Quiet Men. Just don't let this show become your picture of Celtic Music. Then again, if you like a little Foreigner with your Jigs and Reels, this might be the show for you. Who am I to say? I could just be a bitter ex-singer with a jealous axe to grind.

Jiggernaut plays Friday November 14th

Weston Irish Fest Dust Settles

A week has gone by since the Weston Irish Festival broke every record from the last nine years. The weather and crowd were the best we have ever experienced. More than 9,000 visitors traveled to Weston to join us for a fantastic weekend.
It took more than 100 workers and volunteers to make the weekend a success. It took nearly twenty of the best Irish acts in the country and 20 marvelous vendors. It is hard to say thanks enough to everyone involved. The town of Weston joined in more than ever, with Irish music up and down Main Street. The Celtic Ranch led the way and even went as far as organizing the vendors for this year's event. RJ's helped the atmosphere on Main with live Irish music of its own.
The top photo is the fest as it opened Saturday morning. On the right Peter and the kitchen staff frantically try to keep up with the hungry crowd. Michelle guided the outdoor kitchen crew until the bitter end, selling whatever remained. (The kitchen sink was not eaten.) Justin relaxes the Tuesday following the fest. He was forced to drink a Coors from home as nearly every beer brewed in the last three months was consumed in three days. (Justin will be a busy man in the next few weeks.)
Once again, thank you to all who helped and visited. I'm sure everyone who lived through this one will remember the fun for many years!

9th Weston Irish Fest Coming Together

With the big day upon us the late nights are starting to pay off. Earlier this week Mike, Sean & Corey put the finishing touches on the new piece of art on the covered patio. The big photo is an overhead image of the brewery as it looked in 1911.

A special thanks to all those that helped this week especially the guys from Capital Electric who got it all lit up for us again this year.

If You Can't Stand the Heat

Next time cooking dinner for the family sounds like too much work just think of Peter. As O'Malley's head Chef for more year 3 years Peter has seen this before, but cooking for nearly 10,000 people in the next two weeks is never easy. This Saturday and Sunday is the Weston Applefest which draws families from across the midwest. Applefest is celebrating its 30th year. The very next weekend, October 10-12 is our own O'Malley's Irish Fest. Don't miss the famous Irish Stew and Coddle Peter and Michelle have been cooking up.

When you come up and visit be sure to say hello to Peter. He will be the one running around with his hair or tail on fire.

Last Friday a large group of beautiful old vehicles puttered into Weston. They lined historic Main street and made the buildings feel young again. Many of the owners were also kind enough to make their way up the road to the brewery. We had a great time with their visit and hope they felt the same.

1842 Booby Trap

Justin and Corey embarked on a mission to find the secret tunnel linking the cellars to the brewer's mansion next door. Pictured is Justin standing next to what looks like a covered over tunnel entrance with a small hole poked in it that revealed a large amount of rubble. (The small can in Justin's left hand is the stupid juice that gave us this great idea.)

Pictured to the right is Corey stuck in a big dirt hole. Some one a hundred years ago obviously had the same idea we had. There was no tunnel. Just an arch to hold the wall up. On futher inspection there was never anything of interest. We managed to make a big mess, drink beer, and stare at dirt.

Ah, Labor day weekend. We pack up the old festival booth, fire up the VW bus and head down to the Kansas City Irish Festival for the Weekend. Sounds like a good time, no? We'll be slinging food for the next three days and imploring you fine folks to come see us at our festival in October. And Sunday, after all is torn down, we'll be bringing it back here to sling more chow on the Monday Holiday. Feel free to come in and say hi to Corey and myself. We'll be in the kitchen.....um....slinging more food. Sigh. No rest for the weary.

Lonestar Stout rocks the house...

Secret Cellar Tour

Check out this photo of the "Secret" cellar. You can see the places on the wall where the lagering vats once held Weston Lager. The cellar can be viewed as part of our tour of Weston Saturdays at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. If you haven't taken a look yet, be sure to come out.

This cellar was hidden for decades until we finally found the tunnel Justin and Sean are standing in. It lead to the old cellar. 2500 5-gallon buckets of rubble later the tunnel was ready to walk through.

...I posted just because "I wanna"? No, I'm not drunk. I'm not under the influence of any illicit drugs nor have I been spoken to by a short, bald man wearing a shoddy trench coat. Sometimes, sitting in the wee morning hours one just feels like venting. I've spent the past four hours or so plodding and planning over some inane excel spreadsheets wondering if I should poke my eyes out with a sharp stick or drink until I can't feel feelings. I haven't done either yet. Such is the fate of a professional procrastinator. Perhaps I'll sleep on it. In the meantime please enjoy this picture of batboy.

A Waterloo Weekend

I traveled to Waterloo, IA this past weekend for the 2nd annual Iowa Irish Fest. My partner in crime was pub volunteer extraordinaire, Larry C. After a little later than planned departure we made it to Des Moines for lunch at the Raccoon Brewing Company.

After a wee bit of food and handcrafted beer it was back on the road towards Waterloo. We arrived about an hour before the start of the fest so we stopped in to check out Jameson's Pub, the host of the festival and home of one of the festival stages. We were then honored to be joined for a pint by Patrick and Twigger of Gaelic Storm, the headlining act for Friday night. We also had the pleasure of meeting three new acts, Langer's Ball, Exorna, and Wylde Nept - hope to see them in Weston sometime soon. After a great night at the main stage it was back to Jameson's for a bit before calling it a night.

Saturday started with breakfast at Morg's Diner - as stereotypically delicious as you would imagine. Then back at the hotel lobby we had a chat with the Young Dubliners and Larry Kirwan of Black 47 before heading to the festival with Michael, one of the entertainment coordinators of the Minnesota Irish Fair whom we first met at O'Malley's when he came down with The Wild Colonial Bhoys. Enjoyed sets by The Cottars, Cherish the Ladies, Young Dubliners, Black 47, The Trinity Irish Dancers, and The Kildares. Also got to see our friends Marty and Brian from Switchback and met a great new act called Rising Gael. Then it was back to Jameson's for a few pints and more music provided by The Sandcarvers and Wylde Nept. A few pints later it was time to call it a night.

Slept in nearly up to check out time on Sunday. Got that taken care of, and then headed to Morg's for brunch with Michael. Caught the tail end of Young Dubliners set, then hung out with them for a bit before they headed out of town. We are looking forward to seeing them again in Weston on October 11th. We then enjoyed a great set by The Dublin City Ramblers to finish up the fest. Hope to make it back next year -

Am I the only one that thinks the Federal government requires *way* too much paperwork of us hard working Americans? The reason I ask is I just finished our Federal Brewery Excise Tax forms and our quarterly brewer's report of operations. The instructional documentation reads like a Dick and Jane book leading you to believe how wonderfully easy it all is. Several hours and many beers later I have things neatly tied up and a stack of paper that's likely half the rain forest. Oh yeah, the Feds also sent me a postcard. Go figure.

Well...it has been a sweltering few weeks in the brew house for yours truly. We have been working to the point of exhaustion in order to bring you more of our delicious summer seasonal, SunRye's Ale. I have also been developing new and exciting brews for future seasonals and a few just for fun. (yes I have a terrible job) I guess what I am trying to say is I hope to hear from YOU!!! Tell me what you think, ask me a question, gripe about your spouse, it doesn't really matter. I spend my days in the brewery with only minimal outside contact, so... do me a favour and drop me a line. I will probably respond (trying not to sound to desperate)

Out of the frying pan...

No sooner had Corey stepped off the plane from Texas just a few short hours ago we loaded up a Freightliner Sprinter full of delicious WBC beer and he began blazing a trail to the North. Wisconson distributors are clamoring for product and Corey has accepted the call. But let's look closer, shall we...

I've taken the liberty of "mildly" outlining what appears to be the remnants of a quick dip in the pool. We are, however, soaking wet from loading said Freightliner with beer on a *very* muggy Missouri summer afternoon. Will Corey stop by the homestead for a quick shower after a long flight and a grueling load in? Home is only a thirty second walk away, after all. No, my friends. No. That heavenly aroma wafting through the summer breeze, faithful readers, is the sticky sweet stank of dedication. Eight hours worth will be building up in a Freightliner Sprinter. God help the luggage boy at the hotel he spends the night in. Needless to say Corey is making this trip solo. Ride on lone wolf...ride on.
